What joining actually looks like

There's no application essay and no minimum commitment. Email us and we'll add you to the group for the next project. Show up to a planning meeting, pick something to own, and go from there.

  • Email us to say you're interested and what school you attend.
  • Come to a planning meeting for the next event, usually a weekend.
  • Take on a piece of it, whether that is outreach, supplies, setup, social media, or the money.
  • Work the event, then help us plan the next one.

Questions we get a lot

Who can join Livingston Youth Leaders?
Any middle or high school student in the Livingston area, middle schoolers included. Several of our coordinators are in sixth through eighth grade. There's no application process. Email us and come to the next planning meeting.
How do you decide where the money goes?
We choose based on current need, whether that is an unfolding crisis like the COVID-19 oxygen shortage or the Turkey earthquake, an underserved community abroad, or a gap we can see in our own county. The group discusses and decides together before each fundraiser, and we name the recipient publicly.
How often do you run events?
Our big fundraiser, whether a bake sale, bazaar, or fair, happens annually and has become something of a community tradition. On top of that we run several supply drives and service projects throughout the year. Recent years have averaged three to four projects.
Are there leadership opportunities?
Yes, and that is the point of the group. Every role on our board is held by a student, from co-president down to partnerships, finance, and social media. Members who show up and take responsibility grow into those roles, and each year's leadership is drawn from the people already doing the work.
What inspired the group to start?
In May 2021 we learned that underdeveloped countries, India in particular, lacked access to basic healthcare and oxygen supplies during the pandemic, largely because of economic constraints. We figured even a small contribution beat none, and a bake sale let people share their baking and art with the community while raising real money.
Can my business sponsor or partner with you?
Absolutely, we've worked with GKHET, Let's Save Ma, Lions International, Bridges Outreach, and Franciscan Charities of Newark. Local businesses can sponsor through funding, event space, or in-kind goods, and are credited at the event and on our Instagram.
